At a recent auction event hosted by Christie’s and Hunt Auctions, baseball enthusiasts had the chance to bid on a range of rare and significant memorabilia. The auction, which also featured items from the Geddy Lee Collection, saw total sales surpassing $6.8 million.

The star of the show was a 1938 Babe Ruth Brooklyn Dodgers road uniform, which sold for an impressive $882,000. This rare piece of baseball history attracted attention from collectors around the world, eager to own a garment once worn by the legendary Babe Ruth.

Another standout item was a 1968 Hank Aaron Atlanta Braves home jersey. This particular jersey held great significance as it was worn by Aaron when he hit his 500th career home run. Bidders showed their enthusiasm for this piece of baseball history, driving the final selling price to $567,000.

The auction also included several other notable items from the Geddy Lee Collection, which greatly exceeded their estimated values. One such item was a single-signed baseball by President Herbert Hoover, which achieved an astounding $214,200. This impressive sale showcased the high demand for unique and historically significant memorabilia.

Another item from the Geddy Lee Collection that caught the attention of bidders was a Mickey Mantle-signed baseball. What made this particular item special was the inscription by Mantle about Brooks Robinson’s play at third base. The baseball fetched a final price of $30,240, demonstrating the value collectors place on personalized and rare pieces.

One of the most intriguing pieces in the auction was a photograph from the Gladstone Collection. The photograph depicted Civil War soldiers with baseball equipment, providing a glimpse into the intersection of the war and America’s favorite pastime. This historic photograph far surpassed its estimated value, selling for an impressive $113,400.

David Hunt, President of Hunt Auctions, expressed his gratitude for being able to represent such extraordinary collections. He emphasized that the auction results not only reflected the robust market for historic baseball memorabilia but also highlighted the immense value placed on items from significant private collections.

The success of the recent Christie’s and Hunt Auctions event serves as a testament to the enduring popularity and fascination with baseball memorabilia. Collectors and enthusiasts alike eagerly seek out rare and meaningful pieces, willing to invest substantial sums to own a piece of history.
