Rare 1907 Ty Cobb Rookie Postcard Leads Auction of Historic Sports Memorabilia

An auction at Robert Edward Auctions (REA) is causing a stir in the world of sports memorabilia as an extremely rare 1907 Wolverine News postcard featuring a young Ty Cobb takes center stage. With bidding already at $17,000, this piece has captured the attention of collectors due to its scarcity and excellent condition, graded PSA VG 3. Being one of just three known examples, this postcard stands out as the highest graded among them, offering a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to own a slice of history from Cobb’s rookie years.

Ty Cobb, affectionately known as the “Georgia Peach,” was captured on the postcard during his debut full season in Major League Baseball. This artifact not only serves as a collectible but also provides a glimpse into the early days of professional baseball and the rising career of a player who would become a legend in the sport.

Lot #1 in REA’s September Encore Auction, the Ty Cobb postcard holds a significant place among a wide range of vintage and modern sports memorabilia up for grabs. In addition, the 1948-1949 Leaf #8 Satchel Paige Rookie Short Print, graded SGC GOOD, presents a coveted rookie card of the legendary pitcher, adding to the allure of the collection.

Enthusiasts will also appreciate the array of vintage cards available at the auction, with highlights such as the 1952 Topps #312 Jackie Robinson graded NM/MT 8, a rare example that is the highest SGC-graded version seen at public auction in over two years. The 1952 Topps #261 Willie Mays and the 1955 Topps #194 Willie Mays, both graded PSA, offer high-grade cards of another baseball icon. Additionally, the 1959 Topps #514 Bob Gibson Rookie, graded PSA NM-MT+ 8.5, and the 1950 Bowman #46 Yogi Berra, graded PSA MINT 9, provide collectors with top-condition rookie cards of Hall of Fame players.

For autograph enthusiasts, the auction includes signed treasures such as the 1934 R320 Goudey #6 Dizzy Dean, graded PSA GOOD 2 (MK) with a GEM MINT 10 signature, which combines vintage appeal with a pristine autograph. The signed 1968 Topps #280 Mickey Mantle, graded PSA VG-EX+ 4.5, also with a GEM MINT 10 signature, is a must-have for Mantle fans. Furthermore, a pair of autographed Willie Mays cards from 1954 and 1955 Bowman, with PSA signature grades of 8 and 9, respectively, add to the allure of the autographed pieces in the auction.

Adding to the excitement, the auction includes vintage Babe Ruth collectibles, with highlights like a PSA/DNA Type 1 International Newsreel photo from around 1921, used to create the 1932 Ruth Sanella Margarine card.
