Iconic Sports Photography Auction Unveils Rare Autographed Images

Heritage Auctions has unveiled a stunning assortment of autographed vintage sports photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction, capturing iconic moments in sports history. Among the prized items up for bidding is a remarkable 1948 photo of basketball legend George Mikan, mirroring his legendary 1948 Bowman rookie card. The 8×10 Type 1 photo showcases Mikan in action, featuring his signature in blue ink, with an expected auction price exceeding $20,000.

The collection includes a series of signed vintage photos, including a late 1940s image of Cleveland Browns star Otto Graham, matching his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, also autographed. A standout piece is an autographed 1949 photo of Jackie Robinson receiving his Silver Bat for winning the National League batting title, during the year he was crowned MVP. This Type I photo, personalized to “Jeff,” holds particular significance for collectors.

Another compelling piece captures Robinson in 1957, clearing out his locker at Ebbets Field upon retiring from baseball. The photo features his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, accompanied by two bats, one of which belonged to Gil Hodges. This poignant image is anticipated to attract bids upwards of $10,000.

Furthermore, the auction highlights a photo believed to have been used for Willie Mays’ 1952 Topps card, showcasing Mays’ signature on the front, likely signed in the 1990s. The online catalog presents a diverse selection of over 150 vintage images, with some dating back over a century. Noteworthy among these is a shot from the 1919 World Series, capturing Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther shaking hands before the infamous game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. This historic photo, complete with original paper caption and stamps on the back, is expected to start at $8,000.

The auction features an array of rookie photos, including Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970), alongside various images of sports legends like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other pre-war icons. With a rich tapestry of sports history depicted through photography, this auction offers collectors and enthusiasts a unique chance to own a piece of sporting heritage.

Running until June 13, the Icons Photography Auction by Heritage Auctions presents an unparalleled opportunity to acquire rare autographed sports images and delve into the rich history of athleticism and sportsmanship immortalized through the lens.
