Taking center stage in the bustling city of New York, Sotheby’s “Sports Week” auctions will span across six live and online auctions, each curated to showcase the remarkable achievements and lasting legacies of sports luminaries such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Muhammad Ali, Wayne Gretzky, Tom Brady, and Steph Curry, among others. The lineup is a tribute to the enduring impact these athletes have had on the world of sports and beyond.

The “Sports Week” auctions will feature a diverse array of themed events, each offering a unique perspective on the world of sports memorabilia:

– Los Angeles Lakers | Capsule Collection (March 27-April 10)

– The Thrilla in Manila (March 27-April 10)

– ZENITH | Important Sports Artifacts (March 27-April 10)

– Court Classics | Important Basketball Sneakers (March 29-April 12)

– NBA Auctions: 2024 All-Star Game | Online (March 28-April 15)

The surge in demand for distinguished sports artifacts has been notably observed by Sotheby’s, with collectors showing a keen interest in acquiring rare and historically significant items. One of the standout lots in the lineup is a pair of autographed shoes worn by Michael Jordan during Game 5 of the 1996 NBA Finals, with an estimated value ranging from $200,000 to $400,000. These shoes, originating from two former Seattle Supersonics ball boys who each received a shoe from Jordan, present a rare opportunity for enthusiasts to own a piece of basketball history.

Another prized item up for grabs is Muhammad Ali’s boxing trunks from the historic 1975 ‘Thrilla in Manila’ fight against Joe Frazier, previously sold for $118,500 in 2012. The trunks are now anticipated to fetch a staggering amount between $4 and $6 million in a dedicated auction, reflecting the enduring legacy of “The Greatest” in the world of sports.

The Los Angeles Lakers “Capsule Collection” boasts an impressive lineup of memorabilia, including Kobe Bryant’s Game 1 jersey from the 2009 Finals, valued at $1.5 to $2.5 million. Also featured is a Lebron James jersey from his monumental 38,000th point game, estimated to be worth $300,000 to $500,000. In a heartening gesture, portions of the proceeds from select Lakers auction items will be directed towards the Lakers Youth Foundation, underscoring the auction’s philanthropic spirit.

The “Zenith” auction will offer a glimpse into sports history with items such as Jordan’s ‘Shattered Backboard’ jersey from 1985, Ernie Banks’ 500th home run jersey, and a Wayne Gretzky St. Louis Blues jersey from the 1995-96 season. These artifacts serve as poignant reminders of the milestones and memories that have shaped the landscape of sports over the years.

NBA Auctions will cater to basketball aficionados with a selection of memorabilia from the 2024 All-Star Game, featuring jerseys worn by superstars like LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama, Steph Curry, and Sabrina Ionescu during the star-studded event. The items up for auction provide fans with a rare opportunity to own a piece of basketball history and cherish the moments that define the sport.

Sotheby’s “Sports Week” auctions promise to be a celebration of athleticism, courage, and excellence, encapsulating the spirit of competition and camaraderie that unite sports fans across the globe. With a tantalizing array of memorabilia up for grabs, this event is a must-visit for collectors, enthusiasts, and admirers of sporting greatness alike.
