REA’s Record-Breaking Auction: Vintage Sports Card Sales Thrive

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit a home run in its February auction, raking in over $1.2 million in sales with an array of vintage sports cards and memorabilia. The standout piece that stole the show was a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, which commanded a whopping $75,000, marking a new record for its category. This sale speaks volumes about the enduring allure and demand for rare and iconic sports collectibles.

Not to be outshone, a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series made waves by fetching $15,000 with a PSA GOOD 2 grade, setting a new benchmark for its condition. The auction drew in a crowd of eager registry builders and collectors, with particular interest swirling around the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among these, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card took the crown with a winning bid of $19,200, setting the bar high for non-Hall of Famers from this set in its grade.

With a vast assortment of 2,732 items up for grabs, REA showcased a diverse lineup of collectibles that caught the eye of enthusiasts. Noteworthy sales included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA VG-EX 4 card selling for $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA EX-MT 6 card fetching $18,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set going for $12,000, among other standout pieces.

REA President, Brian Dwyer, expressed his satisfaction with the auction’s success and the enthusiastic participation from the collector community. He hinted at more excitement to come in the upcoming March and Spring Auctions, hinting at a thriving future for the hobby and promising even more thrilling opportunities for avid collectors and enthusiasts.

This recent record-breaking auction by REA not only highlights the enduring popularity and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for what promises to be an eventful future. With an Encore event slated for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA remains at the forefront of the sports collectibles market, offering a platform for collectors to chase their prized possessions and unite in their love for the hobby.
