Iconic Signed Photo of Ruth and Gehrig by Arthur Hull Hits the Auction Block

In the world of baseball memorabilia, certain artifacts hold a special place due to their historical significance and the stories they tell. One such item is a recently discovered photograph featuring Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, autographed by the legendary duo and authenticated as an original Type 1 piece. This rare photograph, captured by acclaimed photographer Arthur Hull during the Yankees’ spring training camp between 1927 and 1931, serves as a poignant reminder of the golden age of baseball.

The photograph beautifully showcases the camaraderie and joy between Ruth and Gehrig. The signatures of the two baseball icons, carefully etched on the photo, reflect the dedication Hull had to his craft and subjects. Keith Breitweiser, an acquisitions specialist at Lelands, the auction house handling the sale, emphasizes the exceptional quality of both the autographs and the photograph itself. He describes them as some of the finest examples collectors will ever find.

The journey of this photograph to the auction block is a fascinating tale of historical preservation and serendipity. Following Hull’s passing in 1969, his collection, including this signed photograph, was purchased by Karl Allison and a friend from Hull’s widow. Acquiring the collection for a nominal sum, Allison ensured its protection by storing it away from light and creating a duplicate for display purposes, safeguarding this valuable piece of history.

Beyond its visual appeal, this photograph represents a rare opportunity to own a true slice of sports history. Signed photographs of Ruth and Gehrig, especially those authenticated as Type 1 originals and in excellent condition, are highly sought after by collectors. The upcoming auction, beginning on February 25, is expected to attract significant interest from both dedicated collectors and passionate baseball enthusiasts, providing a unique chance to own a tangible piece of the sport’s illustrious past.

While this auction highlights the enduring fascination with Ruth and Gehrig, it also underscores the importance of meticulous preservation and the role of photography in capturing and commemorating the legends of the sport. As this photograph prepares to find a new home, it serves as a celebration of the lasting legacy of two of baseball’s most revered figures. Immortalized by Arthur Hull’s lens and preserved through the decades, this photograph stands as a testament to Ruth and Gehrig’s monumental impact on the game and American culture as a whole.
